Woody has the ability to capture something that most don’t even know exist, he captures the essence of the experience. The indescribable feeling you get when you watch an empty wave roll by or the unsettling atmosphere as you explore a remote jungle. His artistic eye allows him to see things others would pass by. Woody is perhaps best known for his stunning surf shots but he is equally talented out of the water. His portrait, landscape and lifestyle images could be mistaken for the work of a seasoned veteran but he is only getting started. We asked him a few questions about the world of Woody Gooch in anticipation of the launch of his new website.

Woody Gooch Intro

How did you get in to photography?

I was home-schooled at an early age with my younger brother. I was able to focus on my freedom but more importantly what I wanted to study for "school subjects", which most don't have as an offer. Photography started at the age of 14, as I would take my fathers Nikon DSLR down to the skatepark to document my days with friends. It continued from there and it is now a full time job.

Are you still using Nikon?

Ye, I've shot with Nikon since the first time I picked up a camera.

What are your favourite locations to shoot?

I like bouncing from non-extremes to extremes. I enjoy the hot and cold. I'm happy if I can be floating anywhere between both.

What have been some of your favourite projects to work on?

I shot my first ever clothing Campaign for Rhythm in 2014 and since that job I've photographed all of their seasons. They look after me and trust my creative direction. I've also worked with Corona, DEUS, Billabong, Tourism Queenstown and many others.

Where do you get inspiration?

I try to avoid my computer as much as I can. Books and zines are a high interest of mine. I’m slowly collecting pieces.

Who are your favourite photographers?

They change daily, I bounce from plenty of genres of photography that keep me rolling and fresh.

Who else inspires your work?

I've been always interested in painting and fine arts. But like I said before they change all of the time. There are so many creative people that aren't even recognized which are the ones I enjoy most.

What advice would you give anyone looking to break into photography?

Forever challenge yourself. Have your camera on you at all times.

You focus on the surf and outdoors, why were you drawn to these?

I was raised on the beach. I lived and breathed the ocean. I was fortunate to be able to spend most of my time in the water whether it was surfing or photographing. This had an impact on the people that surround me and it all grew into a full time job with friends from home.

When you go out, do you have a certain shot in mind or do you just take it as it comes?

I'm spontaneous. Mother nature doesn't like it if you try and force her.

Describe a typical day in your world...

I wake up and stare at the ocean first. If its not looking attractive, I'll decide from there.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully still living in Tokyo meeting lots of unique people that I love being around.

What are your plans for 2016?

Letting it happen. I have a lot of big projects to tackle. I'm excited. Very!
